Product Description

Helene Stauffer Hero (1913-1965) began writing these letters when her eldest daughter went off to college in 1956. More than newsy, they are unfiltered accounts of the highs and lows of a life in the Garden District of New Orleans in the middle of the last century. Mother of five girls, Chair of the Women’s Board of the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra and fond of giving parties, these letters are funny, honest, unsparing, disturbing, loving and sad.

Upon finishing the book, I am overwhelmed with emotions. For one, I really don't remember the last time I read a book and found myself laughing out loud. I read most of the book out on the deck of my new house, and my husband kept asking me why I was laughing out there all by myself! Helene's flair for storytelling is razor sharp and her voice is about as authentic as it gets...I have a real feel for who she was. I'm so thrilled that she has now become the author she was always destined to be! There is something gut-wrenching about a voice that rings so true. Through letters sent to her daughters, she shares stories that are often raucously funny and sad at the same time...baring her soul in little bits and pieces.
